VIZ Media’s NEW PEOPLE invited me to curate a Vinyl Village of the Bay Area’s best toy art purveyors for the 2nd annual J-POP Summit. For one fun day, visitors to San Francisco’s Japantown enjoyed an extra (outdoors) serving of Gothic Lolitas, the latest kawaii from Harajuku and graffiti by Estria. They shopped for toys and art, competed in the Pocky Chow Down and sampled sweets and sushi amid the acoustics of rap, rock and a sake barrel breaking. By incorporating fresh content from Japan—and encouraging the involvement of local San Francisco businesses and artists—the J-POP Summit is a platform for the wonderful wave of hybrid culture in our new world community. In 2014, the J-Pop Summit held its 6th annual festival.
