In the spring of 2010, I received the following email from the editor of Design Bureau magazine:
I came across your blog and it looks great. Your original commentary on toys (among other things) would be an interesting addition to our magazine, and I would love to have you as a contributor for our next issue. Design Bureau is a new magazine from the publishers of ALARM. Our mission is to be a global connector for the design community by creating an inspiring dialogue, and our editorial focus is on international art and design, in whatever shape and form it may be found (including toys).
I went on to write over a dozen Toys by Design columns over the course of three great years, increasing the global exposure of niche artists who make imaginative, affordable artwork with unique materials. Among the artists I interviewed: Sergey Safonov (resin and ceramics, Russia), Mark Landwehr (vinyl, Germany), Felt Mistress (textiles, UK), K. Olin Tribu (porcelain, France), Pepe Hiller (wood, Switzerland) and Mike Leavitt (clay, America). Click below for a few samples. In some cases, I posted extended interviews with the artists on my blog here.
